Starring Jaida Marshall, fashion designer
Step into the world of Jaida Marshall, a self taught fashion designer who aspires to be a renowned street-wear designer.
I often like to say that the world revolves around Black creativity—from the songs at the top of the charts, the viral dances on social media, the trendy slang being used and to the latest fashion styles being worn—it all seems to stem from Black people being creative. It is this creativity, laying at the intersection of art and culture, that best showcases what’s in hearts and minds of Black people everywhere.
On the other hand, I feel an essential part of my job as a journalist is to feature the artistic, creative, personal and joyous side of Blackness. A component to this is to highlight, young, gifted and Black youth who should be praised more often in our society for their greatness.
With this being said, in this video, I chose to tell a story that highlights Jaida Marshall, a young, talented Black creative who contributes to the litany of the various forms of Black creativity. Following her through a day of designing and styling, I was able to take a look into her creative world. Inspired by Black fashion moguls like Pyer Moss and Virgil Abloh, Marshall aspires to be a renowned fashion designer who makes clothes and accessories specifically for an audience that appreciates Black culture. Marshall started designing at 15 and ever since, she has honed her stylistic and design skills hoping to continue to share her gift with the world. This is her creative story.
